FIREWALLS
What is a Firewall?
A firewall is data-block that intercepts network data and allows only permitted data to pass through. They are used between local networks and the Internet to prevent unauthorised access to private networks. They can take the form of a specialised piece of hardware or software code that runs on a 'gateway' PC. Hardware firewalls are usually deemed to be a better choice for larger networks as they have a dedicated role and this helps to prevent traffic 'bottlenecks'.
Why do I need one?
It’s a sad fact that with Internet access and all that data out there at you fingertips, that there’s always someone out there with ill intent who can often just as easily find you and the confidential data stored on your PC. Very often they have no intent in targeting you but just select any vulnerable system. This was less of a concern with traditional dial-up connections as only the sharpest of hackers would have time to hack you computers before the line disconnected but with the now widespread adoption of ADSL and other ‘always on’ connections they have far more time for their tools to ‘break’ your security. Fortunately specialist boxes known as firewalls are available to ring-fence your network and these close off the ‘ports’ to all but essential network traffic and hide your network from the Internet. We can advise you on network security and if required provide firewalls where necessary.
